Elevating Latina Wellness: How We Support the Backbone of Our Families

By Cesar Rolon

If we want healthy Latino families, we must invest in Latina wellness first. That means making health care accessible, culturally responsive, and emotionally empowering.

Here are solutions—and hope:

Community-Rooted Health Events

Events like Latina Health Fiestas and Wellness Days provide free or low-cost screenings for blood pressure, diabetes, breast and cervical cancer, and more—in safe, trusted community spaces. These gatherings also include health education, fitness demos, healthy cooking classes, and mental health resources.

Culturally Competent Care

Clinics like Oak Street Health and MinuteClinic offer services in English and Spanish, with staff trained to understand Latina health needs, family dynamics, and cultural values. Many also help patients enroll in insurance programs or offer sliding-scale payment options.

Promotoras de Salud (Community Health Workers)

Promotoras are trusted messengers within Latino communities, trained to educate and guide women through preventive care, nutrition, mental wellness, and chronic disease management. Their outreach is critical to connecting women with lifesaving resources.

Wellness Campaigns That Reflect Latinas

Representation matters. Campaigns like “Tu Salud es Tu Poder” (Your Health is Your Power) remind Latinas that self-care is not selfish—it’s survival. These bilingual campaigns celebrate body positivity, mental health, and the strength that comes from prioritizing wellness.

Mental Health as Part of the Conversation

Latina women suffer from high rates of depression and anxiety—especially those dealing with generational trauma, immigration stress, or domestic violence. Expanding access to bilingual therapists, peer support groups, and culturally relevant therapy models is vital.

A Call to Action: Prioritize Her Health

This May, let’s shift the narrative from “Latinas hold it all together” to “Latinas deserve to be held, healed, and whole.”

  • Encourage the women in your life to schedule their screenings.

  • Share local resources in both English and Spanish.

  • Invite your community to attend health fairs and wellness events.

  • Celebrate rest, boundaries, and joy as part of a holistic health journey.

Latinas are more than caretakers. They are leaders, healers, and warriors. And when we invest in their wellness, we uplift entire generations.
